Credit checks for Talkmobile

What is a credit check?

We use credit checks to look at your financial history before deciding whether to offer you a contract. We have to carry out a credit check every time one of our customers signs up to a monthly phone contract or credit agreement. This helps protect you from identity fraud and stops you from running up bills you can't pay.

We use a credit reference agency to obtain information relating to your address, identity and personal credit history. They then assess this information against their own set criteria, and the order is accepted provided they are satisfied it meets their minimum threshold.

To decide whether we can let you sign up to one of our deals, they look at information from:

How does a credit check work?

We'll always ask your permission before we run a credit check. If you buy something online or over the phone our advisor will put your information into a computer system linked to Talkmobile. We’ll carry out a credit check using a credit reference agency; they will assess this information against set criteria and will send back their decision electronically as soon as possible.

What if my application is not accepted?

The decision to refuse you as a Talkmobile customer is a decision that has been made by Talkmobile credit application system, the data that we use is derived from your Experian Credit Report.

We have set certain parameters based on credit score and credit history that you will have been obtained on your Credit report in order to have their credit application accepted. If you don't meet our criteria, then you are refused credit.

If you have been refused credit by Talkmobile, then all is not lost. You may still be able to become a Talkmobile customer by simply following a few simple steps. Don't try to buy a monthly phone contract online again – completing lots of credit checks in a short space of time can harm your credit rating. We've loads of great deals on Pay As You Go, that don't require a credit check.

Alternatively, the first step you need to take is to get a copy of your Experian Credit Report, as this is what Talkmobile have based their decision on. By checking your credit report, you can clear up any erroneous information and improve your credit score. Experian have a telephone helpline for their customers dedicated to assisting in matters such as this. This has proved beneficial to many people, as by ordering their Experian credit report and improving their credit score, they have then been able to go on and become a Talkmobile customer.

How do I build up a good credit rating?

A 30 day SIM Only deal is the perfect way to build up your credit rating quickly and easily. It gives us a chance to get to know you, putting you in a good position to get a monthly phone contract later down the line. With SIM Only, you can sign up for just a month at a time, so it's easy to swap to a contract once your credit rating improves. What's more you still get great value on minutes, text messages and data.

A credit check is still performed for a 30 day SIM Only deal, but with no equipment included, lower line rentals and shorter contract lengths, we will be more lenient. Whilst no guarantees can be given, your application would be more likely to be accepted for a SIM Only deal rather than a monthly phone contract.

If once you have viewed your credit file you are still unhappy with the decision made by the Talkmobile, you can then appeal directly to us, by supplying an up to date copy of your credit file with a covering letter.
