Inserting your SIM

About your SIM card and SIM card sizes

Your SIM is a little card that needs to be inserted into the back of your phone in order for your phone and services to work. It will arrive in either a small plastic case or an A5 envelope.

What are the different sizes of SIM card?

There are 3 sizes of SIM: 'Standard' which is the largest and now rarely used; 'Micro', which is the smaller most common type; and 'Nano' which is the smallest.

If your phone is a recent UK phone (but not an iPhone), it will probably take a Micro SIM. If you have an iPhone 5 or above, you’ll need a Nano SIM.

To make things easier, we’ve combined the different formats into a Tri SIM, so you don’t have to worry about ordering the right size. You’ll just need to snap out the right size SIM and pop it into your phone.

Please note that you won’t be able to choose a different SIM size once you’ve snapped it out, so please check the manufacturer’s website if you’re unsure which size you need.

If you need a replacement SIM, just contact our Help Team and we’ll send a new one out to you. We’ll deliver your SIM free of charge and you should receive it in 3-4 working days.

Put your SIM in your phone (non iPhone)

Most phones need you to take the back cover off your phone.

First make sure your phone is switched off. Then start by taking the back cover off your phone. You might need to take the battery out as well, as some SIM slots are located underneath it.

Slide the SIM card into the SIM card tray, making sure it’s facing the right way around (your phone should have a picture you can follow, but usually the little metal square on your SIM card needs to be facing down).

Once you’ve got the SIM card inserted, replace the battery and the back cover. Now you’re ready to activate your SIM if you need to do so. (See our Help section Activate your SIM.)

P.S. If you’re having trouble, you can find more information on SIM installation on your phone manufacturer’s website. You can also find SIM installation videos for your phone on YouTube.

Put your SIM in your phone (iPhone)

First, make sure your phone is switched off. Then, find the SIM card tray on the side of your iPhone.

Use the SIM eject tool that came in the original packaging to open the SIM tray. This is a small metal pin. If you don’t have the SIM eject tool, you can use a paperclip to open the tray.

Then insert the SIM card into the tray, making sure it’s the right way up and close the tray. Now you’re ready to activate your SIM if you need to do so.

P.S. If you’re having trouble, you can find more information on the Apple website.

What happens after you put your SIM in your phone

After you’ve inserted your SIM, you may need to activate it. This is usually the case if you're upgrading your phone, but not if you're new to Talkmobile.

Activating your SIM lets you use your phone and services. Activation can take up to 24 hours, but it usually doesn’t take more than 1 or 2 hours. To find out if you need to activate your SIM, see our Help section Activate your SIM.

If your SIM is already activated, you'll receive some Talkmobile settings. These let your phone use Internet and send picture messages on the Talkmobile website. Your phone will usually adjust to Talkmobile settings automatically, but sometimes they'll arrive as text messages to your phone.

If you don’t receive any settings messages, or after you get your settings messages something doesn’t work, there’s an easy solution: just go to Get settings and send your settings to your phone by following the Get settings steps.
