Alcatel might not be a brand that you’re familiar with, but their Idol 4 definitely promises to change that. It’s already set the mobile world ablaze, winning a dazzling 14 awards at Mobile World Congress 2016. And it’s easy to see why.
It’s a sleek, glass and metal affair, with a gorgeous 5.2-inch display, fantastic sound and a Virtual Reality headset in the box. It runs on Android, with an eight-core processor and a whopping 3GB of RAM, giving you oodles of speed. All in all, we absolutely love it.
With so much on offer, it’s difficult to even know where to start. The Idol 4 comes bundled with a VR headset, letting you experience your apps and games in a whole new dimension. If you haven’t used a Virtual Reality headset before, you’ll be amazed by how much it brings to your overall experience, especially if you love gaming.
Speaking of gaming, the Idol 4 is definitely designed to handle high-intensity tasks. The 3GB of RAM under its glass exterior will give you a seriously smooth experience. It’s also powered by an eight-core Snapdragon processor, making for blistering speeds. So whether you’re gaming, switching between apps or doing almost anything else, you’ll have a speedy, virtually seamless experience.
You’ll be enjoying that experience on a 5.2-inch, full HD screen. It’s a high quality display, making everything from editing documents to catching up on Netflix a real joy. Speaking of which, the Idol 4 comes packing four speakers, all tuned by audio maestros JBL. So you’ll enjoy some really immersive sound to go with that big, bright, crisp display. The viewing angles are great, too, so you’ll have no trouble watching your content of choice while you’re out and about.
The rear camera is an impressive 13 megapixels, which is more than capable of producing brilliant photos. The front-facing camera, meanwhile, has 8 megapixels, which means your selfies and video calls should be picked up perfectly. There’s even a front-facing flash, so you’ll be able to shoot with both cameras in low light, too.
There’s plenty of quirky features to love about this phone, too. Unlike a lot of other devices, the screen will flip if you’re holding the phone upside down. It’s a lovely touch – and it’s really handy if you’re in a rush. The “Boom Key” on the side, meanwhile, handles loads of functions, from letting you create a photo collage to toggling your volume. It’s little touches like this that really set the Idol 4 apart.
Serious users might struggle with the 16GB of on-board memory, since it’s unlikely to be enough for loads of apps and games. Fortunately, though, the Idol 4 has a handy MicroSD slot built in, so you can expand your storage almost to your heart’s content. For a phone that packs so many features into its well-designed frame, it’s a sacrifice that we’d be more than willing to make, especially in this price range.
So that’s the Alcatel Idol 4. And if you couldn’t tell, we’re big fans of it. First time users might find it a bit overwhelming – and if you haven’t used Android before, you might find the change a little tricky, at first. But this really is a brilliant all-rounder, with a stunning screen, great audio and remarkable performance. Add all that to the Virtual Reality experience and you’ve got a frankly fantastic phone for its price point.
