What is Mobile Data? A 2026 Guide to Data Usage & Allowances

Key Points:

  • Mobile data lets you use the internet from your smartphone.
  • 4G and 5G allow for unrestricted use of video and heavier web browsing.
  • Streaming 4K video can use as much as 7-10GB per hour.
  • Average 4G use amounts to 10GB per month, but 5G use can be 3x as much.

If you're using your phone to connect the internet on the move, chances are you'll be using mobile data. Phones have evolved over the past couple of decades to much more than just devices to send and receive texts. Thanks to 4G and 5G, your smartphone is capable of providing you with high-speed web functionality, such as scrolling through social media, streaming HD and 4K video, video conferencing, and even gaming, regardless of where you are in the country, provided your signal is good enough. This simple guide goes through how mobile data works.

How does mobile data work?

iMobile data became mainstream with 3G in the 2000s, allowing for basic web browsing. By 2012, 4G had been introduced, offering speeds up to 10x faster, making video playback a reality; today, 5G delivers the full-fat, uninterrupted connectivity comparable (or superior) to high-end home broadband.

3G and 4G mobile data rely on large data towers/masts to emit radio signals across several miles. The standards for both are similar; however, 4G differs by standardising all traffic into data packets and then streamlining them more efficiently to devices. In simple terms, this results in superior battery life and significantly less waiting for pages to load.

5G, on the other hand, is completely different. Instead of large radio towers transmitting data, the current mobile data standard uses cell nodes that can be placed throughout a town or city. They are significantly denser than their 3G and 4G predecessors, able to connect to around a million devices, small cells, which you can often find on light poles, attached to buildings, or unobtrusively spotted throughout the countryside. It's a massive upgrade.

Data usage allowances explained in 2026

The average 4G user consumes between 8GB and 10GB per month. This typically encompasses social media scrolling, music streaming, and occasional HD video use. Given average real-world speeds around 20-50 Mbps, 4G is not ideal for heavy use, such as video streaming or gaming, which can quickly burn through a smaller set allowance.

5G mobile data is considerably faster than 4G. You can expect average speeds between 70 and 200 Mbps, which makes it better for people using a lot of data. Average 5G data users consume nearly 3x as much as 4G customers (about 17-20GB) due to faster, more reliable, and consistent connections. Mobile data plans explained

It's important to know exactly how much data streaming 4K video over 5G can use. Depending on the provider (Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+), this can range between 35 and 70 Gbps, which consumes around 7-10GB of mobile data per hour. 5G is fast enough to eliminate buffering, and does not typically consume more data than 4G. If you're someone who watches a lot of movies and TV shows, a SIM-Only plan with a high data limit would be preferable.

Social media use can vary heavily. Scrolling through text- or image-based platforms like Facebook and Instagram can use around 100 MB of data per hour. However, more intensive video platforms (TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram Reels) can use as much as 1GB an hour. Therefore, mobile browsing can range from 1.5MB to 2.6MB per minute. Bottom line, it all adds up.

Talkmobile's SIM-Only plans offer a wide range of options depending on your use case. Over a 30-day period, you can opt for a 15GB to 150GB plan. A 15GB plan should be more than enough for a 4G connection, whilst a plan with more data is ideal for high-speed connectivity with 5G. Alternatively, you can opt for a 12-month plan between 70GB and 200GB, all of which come with Unlimited Texts and Minutes, so you can use the full span of mobile data without compromise.
