10 Quick fixes to restore your mobile data connection
There's a number of reasons why your mobile data can just stop working. You could be in a built-up area with tall buildings blocking cellular reception. Similarly, it could be incredibly congested, or you may be far from a 4G / 5G hub. Telltale signs are usually buffering, slowdowns, and unresponsiveness on your smartphone. Let's take a look at how to fix this.

1. Toggle Airplane Mode
Turning on Airplane Mode for about 30 seconds and then turning it back off forces your smartphone to reconnect to the network. If there are any short-term problems, this usually fixes them.
2. Restart your phone
It sounds simple, but a hard reset of your phone can clear any glitches or temporary connection issues that may have occurred during travel or since leaving the house.
3. Check that Mobile Data is enabled
Whether you're on iOS or Android, double-checking that Mobile Data is enabled could be the fix you're looking for. Sometimes an update can tick it off by default, as can connecting to some Wi-Fi networks under some circumstances.
4. Check your signal strength
Your smartphone may technically display 4G or 5G at the top, but that won't mean much if you barely have a signal. Confined spaces and rural areas are notoriously poor for radio waves to penetrate, as 4G requires proximity to a tower/mast, and 5G relies on a small cell node that must be nearby.
5. Check your remaining data balance
If your mobile data isn't working, you may simply have run out of data for your 4G or 5G allowance. Talkmobile's SIM-Only plans give you great flexibility in how much data you want: 15-150GB over 30 days, or 70-200GB for a 12-month plan. If you find yourself routinely running out of data, then you may be due for an upgrade.
6. Enable data roaming
If you're trying to use your UK data allowance in another EU country, then you will need to enable data roaming. Talkmobile's Roaming Charges include roaming in Zone A within your usual allowance, in more than 40 countries, including Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.
7. Reset your network settings
Manually resetting your network settings can reset your mobile data. Think of it as a clear cache.
- For iPhone users, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset > Reset > Network Settings
- For Android users, Settings > System > Reset > Network Settings
8. Reinsert your SIM card
If all else has failed so far, gently and carefully remove, clean, and then reinsert your SIM card. This sometimes forces a hard reset and kick data back to life.
9. Update your phone's software
Delaying a crucial iPhone or Android update can create vulnerabilities that compromise security and degrade mobile data performance. Be sure to regularly search for available updates, install them, and then restart the phone.
10. Check and manually set APN settings
The APN (Access Point Name) needs to match the carrier of choice. For example, our APN is talkmobile.co.uk with an APN Type of default, supl, mms, or internet+mms. You can contact our support team if you're unsure of what to look out for.
