What Are Mobile Roaming and Data Roaming Charges?

Key Points:

  • Data roaming charges apply when outside your usual UK allowance.
  • Talkmobile's SIM Only plans feature Inclusive Roaming using your standard allowance in 47 European countries.
  • Outside of the EU, you may need to purchase a World Holiday Booster for a top-up of mobile data for countries like Australia and the USA.
  • Zones C and D are more remote countries where rates can be higher than other continents.

Staying connected when out on the go is more important than ever in 2026. With high-speed 5G connectivity, you can use the full extent of your mobile phone's capabilities without limitation, and that can extend to Data Roaming. Without planning you could be subject to charges when abroad. We're going through everything you need to know about Data Roaming charges and how to get the best value for money.

What are Data Roaming charges?

Depending on your provider, you could be subject to charges when data roaming, which means using your smartphone when abroad. This is because your phone connects to a foreign network which is partnered with your domestic one. Talkmobile is partnered with Vodafone and uses its international partners to provide its services, but your mileage may vary depending on where you are and who you're with.

All of Talkmobile's SIM Only deals offer Inclusive Roaming within the EU which accounts for 47 popular European destinations, including France, Germany, Ireland, Italy and dozens more. However, roaming charges can apply for anywhere that's outside of the UK or these Zone A destinations.

Zone B countries, such as Australia, China, Japan, and the United States, require a World Holiday Booster on top of your SIM Only plan to continue to use your handset's data with three plans available: one-day (500MB for £5), 8-day (5GB for £20), and 15-day (8GB for £30), which will keep you online without being subject to additional charges.

How to avoid data roaming charges in 2026

We've outlined the rates per Zones B, C, and D but you can avoid data roaming charges by utilising free/public Wi-Fi connections, such as those you find in airports, hotels, restaurants, and in large, connected cities. If you're afraid of going over your monthly plan, you can mitigate this by downloading routes on Apple Maps and Google Maps, and pre-downloading TV episodes and movies, which can be upwards of 10GB per hour for 4K files. Being smart with your planning, and knowing what is and isn't included is the best way forward here.

You can also set your spend limit to avoid unexpected charges. Your spend limit is the maximum amount you'll be allowed to spend on usage outside your monthly allowance. You can amend it in MyAccount or by using the orange Chat Now button on the right hand side of the page.
