What is 5G? A Simple Guide to the UK’s Fastest Network

Key Points:

  • Speed: Around 10 times faster than 4G
  • Capacity: Works in crowds where 4G can fail
  • Response: Less lag (better for gaming and video calls)
  • Advisory: You’ll need a modern-day smartphone (post-2022) to make use of the technology

Ever wondered what that 5G icon at the top of your phone actually means? When it’s visible, web pages load instantly, videos buffer quickly… but when it’s off everything seems to slow down. That’s why we’ve created a no-nonsense guide about 5G - including how it works, the benefits of having it and why it’s making your mobile life easier in 2026. Let’s kick off.

The Basics: What does the 'G' stand for?

Let’s start with the basics. The “G” in “5G” stands for generation. So, 5G is the fifth network generation, succeeding 4G which first rolled out in 2012. It wasn’t just a tweak; it was a complete overhaul to allow for far higher speeds and lower latency. 4G infrastructure, by contrast, looks primarily to support calls and data.

We’ll touch on this later on, but think of mobile data as travelling on radio waves. 4G has lower-frequency waves that can travel long distances but can’t hold much data. In contrast, 5G uses a mix of waves, including higher frequency waves which are wider. This allows them to carry more data. The result? More responsive, faster and less “laggy” mobile browsing, gaming and streaming.

How “G” has evolved through the years

Generation Era / Decade Primary Service Max Speed Key Innovation
1G 1980s Analogue Voice 2.4 kbps The Brick Phone: World’s first wireless voice calls using analog radio signals.
2G 1990s Digital Voice & SMS 48 kbps The Digital Shift: Moved from analog to digital. Encrypted calls and text messaging (SMS) established.
3G 2000s Mobile Internet 2 Mbps - 42Mbps The Smartphone Era: Introduced mobile data, allowing for basic web browsing. Early apps started to appear.
4G (LTE) 2010s High-Speed Data 100-150Mbps Mobile Broadband: HD video streaming (Netflix/YouTube) and App Economy starts to ramp.
5G 2020s Hyper-Connectivity 10-20Gbps The Smart World: Infrastructure overhaul supporting near-zero latency.

Speed, Capacity, and Lag - what makes 5G better

5G hasn’t actually been around all that long. It kicked off in 2019, with the first commercial services launching in South Korea, with the UK following shortly after. So, what makes it better than 4G?

1. Incredible Speed

5G is roughly 10 times faster than 4G - so you’ll certainly notice the difference if you’re streaming content on the go or browsing the web. To put that into perspective, last year’s Mobile Matter’s report from Ofcom revealed that “on average” 5G connections were “consistently faster for file downloads”. The report summary reads: “For example, downloading a 2MB file – such as a photo or short low-resolution video – takes 0.3 seconds on 5G, compared to 0.7 seconds on 4G and 4.9 seconds on 3G.”

2. Massive Capacity

Ever wondered why when you’re sometimes in a busy place you may have network “signal” but nothing actually loads? This is called network congestion. 4G towers can support between 4,000 - 100,000 devices per square kilometer, while 5G can handle up to one million. It does this by using wider frequency bands which helps reduce lag and speed drops.

3. Ultra-Low Latency

Speaking of lag, the 5G “latency” which is the delay you would experience tapping a link and it loading, is also a fraction of the time compared to 4G. Typically, 5G will take 1 millisecond, while 4G will take around 40 milliseconds. The result? 5G will “feel” snappier, whether you’re browsing the web or trying to play a game.

Do I need a new phone for 5G?

Yes. Your phone will need a certain type of antenna. However, the good news is that nearly every smartphone released since 2022 is 5G ready. So, if you’re after a cracking sim-only deal, Talkmobile’s network is 5G ready and can plug right into your compatible handset.

  • Why Talkmobile?: You don't need a special "5G Plan" with us. We include 5G as standard on all our SIM-only deals. If your phone can do it, we provide it, so it’s the perfect time to upgrade. Check your local signal with our network coverage map.

Is it worth upgrading to 5G?

Absolutely. While 4G served a purpose, 5G is very much a step change if you’re yet to upgrade. So long as you have a compatible handset and 5G network coverage, it can be as simple as swapping out your old sim with one of our sim-only deals.
